Overview

Kedarnath Temple – One of the Sacred 12 Jyotirlingas of India

Kedarnath Temple is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India and holds a prominent place among the 12 Jyotirlingas—sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. These Jyotirlingas are believed to be self-manifested representations of Lord Shiva, and each holds deep spiritual and mythological significance in Hinduism.

Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, nestled in the lap of the majestic Himalayas at an altitude of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level. The temple is not only a key site in the Jyotirlinga circuit but is also one of the Panch Kedar—five sacred Shiva temples in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

According to Hindu mythology, Kedarnath is where Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a Jyotirlinga to bless devotees and escape the Pandavas after the Kurukshetra war. The temple’s remote location and challenging accessibility add to its spiritual aura. Pilgrims can reach Kedarnath via a 16 km trek from Gaurikund, or by helicopter services that operate during the pilgrimage season.

Kedarnath stands not only as a testament to faith and devotion but also as a symbol of endurance, nestled amidst snow-capped peaks and a serene environment that attracts thousands of devotees and spiritual seekers every year. Read More
